The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has called on officers to treat journalists with respect as they cover the Akwatia by-election, scheduled to take place on 2 September.
The appeal follows the assault of a reporter by a police officer during last month’s Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.
Speaking in Accra after a meeting with leaders of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), IGP Yohuno said media workers play a crucial role in elections and must be protected.
“All we are telling police personnel countrywide is that the brothers and sisters who hold the camera and the phones to take whatever they want during the election time – I think there is a level to which they can go, but you have to be moderate in handling them,” he said.
He added that journalists serve as an important bridge between events on the ground and the wider public.
“Because, without them, the rest of the people who are at home watching – they cannot see what is going on … Some of us, we have reached this stage, and without the media, nobody would have heard of our name,” he said.
The IGP also pledged to guarantee the safety of journalists during the by-election, promising that police will ensure their protection.
“We will make sure that we will protect you,” he said.
The Akwatia by-election is being monitored closely, with political parties and civil society groups calling for transparency and calm.
