President John Dramani Mahama has awarded 13 residents of Sikaman-Brofoyedu a total of GHC100,000 for assisting in the recovery of bodies following a military helicopter crash earlier this month, officials said on Wednesday.
Representing the president, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah visited the community to thank the rescuers and deliver the financial support.
The helicopter crashed on August 6 in the Dampia Range Forest Reserve in the Adansi Akrofrom District, killing eight high-profile officials, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Minister for Environment, Science and Technology Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
The officials were on official duty at the time of the accident.
“As instructed by the president, I am here to personally thank the residents who helped recover the bodies of our eight men,” Asiedu Nketiah told the community.
“The president has also provided a plaque in recognition of their efforts.”
In addition to the GHS100,000 allocated to the rescuers, GHS20,000 ($1,700) was given to the Adansi Traditional Council to support remaining funeral arrangements.
Asiedu Nketiah also said the 13 individuals involved in recovery efforts would be offered jobs based on their skills and that the government plans to improve infrastructure in the area, including repairing local roads.
The support package has been described by local observers as a significant gesture of recognition for the community’s role in the national tragedy.
