Atlantic Lithium: We’re poised to surpass supply of feldspar in Ghana

The Australia-based Atlantic Lithium on Thursday (19 October) secured a 15- year mining lease from the government of Ghana after meeting all the necessary requirements

Atlantic Lithium Limited, the African-focused lithium exploration and development company has assured that its operation will translate into a significant supply of feldspar minerals in the Ghanaian market.

It comes after the company showcased some Industry-standard ceramic bowls produced from trial firings using sample feldspar from the company’s Ewoyaa Lithium project in Ghana.

Feldspar is the name of a large group of rock-forming silicate minerals that makeup over 50% of the earth’s crust.
It is mainly used for the manufacturing of a wide variety of glass and ceramic products. They are also widely used as fillers in paints, plastics and rubbers.

Atlantic Lithium Ltd said its Ewoyaa lithium project in Ghana also has almost 14 million tonnes of feldspar that might prove to be a valuable by-product.

An initial mineral resource for Ewoyaa’s feldspar showed a JORC-compliant resource of 15.7 million tonnes at a 40% grade, of which 13.7 million tonnes, or 87%, were in the measured and indicated categories.

Sharing the news on social media on Tuesday (12 December) Atlantic Lithium said the feldspar minerals resource estimate demonstrates the company’s potential to meet and surpass Ghana’s demand requirement.

Feldspar minerals have many uses in industry. They are used to manufacture a wide variety of glass and ceramic products. They are also widely used as fillers in paints, plastics and rubber.

“Currently supplied only by small-scale mining operations, we intend to supply the feldspar into the local Ghanaian ceramics market.”

“The Feldspar MRE indicates Ewoyaa’s potential to meet and even surpass Ghana’s demand requirements, further demonstrating the significant contribution the Project is expected to bring to Ghana,” the company said.

Mining lease

The Australia-based Atlantic Lithium on Thursday (19 October) secured a 15- year mining lease from the government of Ghana after meeting all the necessary requirements.

The company has since added 8,000 metres (m) or 43% more to a drilling programme at its Ewoyaa lithium project in the Central Region to expand the resource.

The additional drilling will take the programme underway currently to 26,500m, said Atlantic, with completion scheduled for the second quarter of 2024.
