ECG employees stage walkout during Ashanti regional minister’s May Day speech

This happened just when Simon Osei-Mensah was called upon to deliver his speech, on the day set aside to celebrate workers across the world

Workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on May Day staged a walkout as tensions between Ashanti Regional Minister and employees of the power distributor escalates.

This happened just when Simon Osei-Mensah was called upon to deliver his speech, on the day set aside to celebrate workers across the world.

The protest stemmed from the minister’s decision to order the arrest of the regional manager of ECG and his refusal to issue an apology for this action.

Clad in red, the ECG workers held placards with inscriptions calling on the politician to desist from interfering in their operations. Bismark Adomah, the national vice-chairman of the ECG Senior Staff Workers Union, emphasized that unless an official apology and the withdrawal of the case were swiftly provided, all communication with the minister would cease.

“As you are aware, we already have an issue with him. He has done something that the workers’ front is not happy about. Initially, the workers’ front demanded that we shouldn’t even attend the event at all. But we felt it was important to represent ourselves.”

“Since he has indicated, he is not prepared to fulfil our demands, we don’t even want to listen to him. This is a peaceful protest to show that we will not listen to whatever he has to say. Once he finishes his speech, we will leave,” he stated.
