Esteem Resources Africa calls for strict enforcement of law on punishing perpetrators of “Trokosi”

Trokosi is a traditional system where virgin girls, some as young as six years old, are sent into Troxovi shrines (shrines for gods) as slaves to make amends for wrongs committed by a member of their family

Non-governmental organisation, Esteem Resources Africa has called for the strict enforcement of the law on punishing perpetrators of Trokosi in Ghana.

Trokosi is a traditional system where virgin girls, some as young as six years old, are sent into Troxovi shrines (shrines for gods) as slaves to make amends for wrongs committed by a member of the virgin girl’s family.

Appearing on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (20 April), chief executive officer of Esteem Resources Africa, Rovaughna Richardson, questioned why no fetish priest has so far been prosecuted for such crimes.

“In the laws, there is a three-year mandatory sentence for any priest seen engaging in Trokosi and yet till now there is not a single priest who has served the sentence even though there are glimmers of the practice,” she said.

Richardson added, “It is difficult to track those who are under servitude and those who are working as house help because it is so deeply entrenched within the society and there are areas where the lines between the two blurs.”
