Recruitment saga: “If 500,000 want to join the police, where will they find thieves to arrest?” — Asiedu Nketiah asks

Chairman of ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has added his voice to the debate surrounding the ongoing police recruitment exercise, highlighting the overwhelming number of applicants seeking to join the Ghana Police Service.

Speaking on the issue at an event, Asiedu Nketia said about 500,000 young people have applied for the recruitment, far exceeding the number of positions available.

According to him, government budget constraints mean only about 5,000 applicants can be recruited this year.

“If you check this number, where will they get thieves to arrest?” he said, pointing to the high level of interest among the youth in joining the police service.

“You have to work and get money to pay them. And so we budgeted and realised that we can recruit 5,000,” he said.

Gov’t pressure

He acknowledged that the limited recruitment slots have placed pressure on officials overseeing the process, including Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka.

The NDC chairman added that although many qualified applicants may not be admitted this year, the government hopes to open another recruitment window later in the year.

“And so Muntaka is suffering but he has also been telling us his side,” Asiedu Nketia said, noting that authorities must work within available resources when expanding the security services.

“This is for only this year, but in October we are hopeful to open recruitment again and recruit more Ghanaians,” he said.
