The Rebecca Foundation, led by former First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has handed over a fully furnished, modernized 100-seater school library to the Achimota Basic School in Accra.
The facility, which is equipped with nine computers and internet access, is expected to significantly boost research, reading and ICT learning among pupils.
The new library is seen as a timely intervention for the school, which has a combined population of over 2,500 pupils across the basic and junior high levels. Until now, the school had operated without a well-resourced library, making research and academic support challenging.
The former First Lady described the initiative as part of the Foundation’s vision to give Ghanaian children the tools they need to learn, grow and dream.

At the inauguration of the library, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo said returning to a school environment felt like coming back home, as classrooms like these once shaped her own journey.
She explained that the library was not just a room with books and computers but “a place of possibility; a gateway to the world”.
“When I was your age, I had big dreams too, but I needed tools — a place to learn and explore. This library gives you those tools. It gives you the power to reach far beyond what you can see,” she said.

The former First Lady urged students to make the most of the facility, adding that the books and computers were dedicated to them. She encouraged them to be curious, committed and ready to learn, making the library their “second home”.
She also expressed gratitude to the staff and Old Students Association, which contributed to the furnishing and stocking of the facility.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the Municipal Director of Education, Cynthia Aboni, described the library as a beacon of hope and a critical resource for the growing student population.
She revealed that the primary school alone has over 1,500 pupils, while enrollment at the junior high school exceeds 1,000 students, making the demand for a functional library “not just necessary, but very urgent.”
“This is not merely a building filled with books — it is a knowledge hub, a digital space and a sanctuary where imaginations will thrive,” she said.
She advised the students to use the facility responsibly and avoid turning it into a playground.

“Great leaders, inventors and thinkers are shaped by what they read — not only by what they see on social media. Let the library sharpen your minds and guide you on the path of excellence,” she added.
In her acceptance speech, the Headmistress of Achimota Basic School, Edith Naa Dedei Kyeremateng, expressed profound gratitude to the Rebecca Foundation for fulfilling a promise made during the school’s 60th anniversary celebration.
She recalled how the school had appealed for a library for years with no success, until the former First Lady stepped in.
“This is not an ordinary library, but one stocked with computers and e-books. We accept this magnificent gift with our hands and our hearts,” she said.
She stated that the donation would positively impact the lives of over 4,000 learners now and thousands more in the future. She also acknowledged the former First Lady’s support in facilitating the school’s dining hall project.
“Mummy, God richly bless you,” she concluded, expressing appreciation on behalf of the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, the PTA, staff, students and the SMC.
The Achimota Basic School community has since pledged to maintain the facility and put it to full use to improve academic outcomes and nurture a culture of reading among students.
