EC reaffirms: Voters registration exercise commences Tuesday 12 September

In a statement, Michael Boadu, acting head of public affairs at the EC, says the exercise will take place at all the 268 district officers

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, has reaffirmed that its limited voters registration exercise which it announced on 17 August 2023, at a press briefing in Accra, dubbed “Let the Citizen Know,” will come off as planned from Tuesday 12 September and end on Monday 2 October 2023.

In a statement signed by Michael Boadu, the acting head of public affairs at the EC, the Commission says the exercise will take place at all the 268 district officers of the Commission across.

“The Electoral Commission wishes to inform the General Public that the 2023 Voters Registration Exercise begins on Tuesday, 12th September, 2023 and ends on Monday, 2nd October, 2023. The Registration takes place at all the 268 District Offices of the Electoral Commission.

“Persons who have attained the age of 18 years since the last registration exercise and those who for one reason or the other did not register in 2020, should visit the District Office where they reside with either their Ghana Card or their Ghana Passport” the EC statement read.

“Eligible applicants who do not possess any of the identification documents listed above are required to present two (2) persons who are already registered voters to guarantee their registration.

“The General Public is informed that it is a criminal offense for non-Ghanaians (foreigners) and persons who are not 18 years and above (minors) to attempt to register” the statement further read.

Court action

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and four other parties on Thursday 7 September 2023, sued the Electoral Commission, of Ghana over the upcoming limited voter registration exercise.

In their writ, the parties said it is unlawful and unreasonable for the electoral management body to restrict the centers for the exercise to just its district offices. The other parties are the Convention People’s Party (CPP), All People’s Congress (APC), Liberal Party of Ghana (LGP) and the Great Consolidated People’s Party (GCPP).

The parties in their action, prayed the Supreme Court to declare that upon a true and proper interpretation of Articles 45(a), 45(e) and 42 of the Constitution, the decision by the EC to undertake the 2023 limited/continuous voter registration at the district offices of the EC instead of undertaking same on the basis of electoral areas “will result in voter suppression particularly in rural constituencies of the country, and is thus unconstitutional as it violates the rights of first-time voters to register and vote”.
