Raymond Tamakloe defends Mahama’s 120-day delivery: promises are being met within legal framework

Government communications team member Raymond Edem Tamakloe has pushed back against criticisms of the Mahama administration’s performance in its first 120 days, insisting that “over 70% of promises have already been fulfilled” and the remaining initiatives are “well underway”.
Appearing on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (8 May), Tamakloe cited the repeal of three major taxes — E-Levy, Bet Tax, and Emissions Levy — along with the launch of job creation programmes and a leaner cabinet as proof of the government’s commitment to its social contract.
“We promised to scrap these burdensome taxes, and we have delivered,” Tamakloe said. “The government is operating with only 56 ministers — the leanest in the Fourth Republic.”
He responded to criticisms that the no-academic-fee policy had not been implemented in full, explaining that delays were due to the timing of the budget appropriation process. He assured that first-year students would receive refunds once universities receive disbursements.
On the issue of illegal mining, Tamakloe said President Mahama had shown political will by initiating legislative action to prohibit mining in forest reserves and water bodies.
“The LI will be amended when Parliament resumes to remove presidential discretion and make the ban airtight,” he said.
Tamakloe further stressed that while some measures await parliamentary action, that does not mean they have stalled.
“The president was clear. Draft amendments are ready. Once Parliament reconvenes, they will be introduced. This is governance within a legal framework.”
Addressing the broader implications of the 120-day contract, Tamakloe clarified that while the specific timeline may expire, the social contract between the government and the people continues throughout the administration’s term.
“As long as President Mahama remains in office, there is an ongoing contract of trust and accountability with the people,” he said.
