Queen mother urges Ghanaian women to embark on routine breast cancer screening

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in Ghanaian women, according to recent ata

As breast cancer month is being observed prominent voices like the queen mother of the Mampong Traditional Area in the Ashanti Region, Nana Agyakoma Dufie II, are challenging the masses, particularly women, to embark on routine screening.

The traditional ruler has been embarking on a campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer and its associated risk due to late detection.

About one in eight women will get breast cancer during her life. In 2020 approximately 2.3 million cases of breast cancer were recorded by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the world, with 685,000 deaths globally. In Ghana, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in Ghanaian women.

Nana Agyakoma Dufie II, who joined the Breast Love Foundation in its breast cancer awareness campaign while sharing her experience with breast examination said she believes most people tend to avoid clinical examination of the breast due to the ‘fear of the uncertainty.’

“It’s not the procedure, but the fear of the uncertainty, what is really going to happen, in case something is found in my breast, is it the end of me, I think it’s the fear of the uncertainty.”

She urged women to conduct routine breast examinations. “I encourage every young woman if you are 40 and above to do your annual check-ups, if you are 40 and above, you need to do a mammogram, if you are below 40, you need to do your regular check-up.”

The founder of Breast Love Foundation Juliana Assenso Boakye said the walk was to raise awareness about the benefits of early detection. “Breast cancer is taking women rapidly, to know that something little if detected early will save a life, or if something tiny will develop to something that will kill you, we need to get it out there.”

She urged men to help examine their wives regularly.
