Sacking Adu Boahen apt, says GII boss

President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday terminated the appointment of the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry Charles Adu Boahene in connection with a documentary by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas

Linda Ofori-Kwafo, the executive director of Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has described the dismissal of the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry Charles Adu Boahen as a step in the right direction.

President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday terminated the appointment of Boahene in connection with a documentary by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

“After being made aware of the allegations levelled against the Minister in the exposé, “Galamsey Economy”, the President spoke to Mr. Adu Boahen, after which he took the decision to terminate his appointment, and also to refer the matter to the Special Prosecutor for further investigations,” the statement of his termination said.

“The sacking of the Minister of State is actually a step in the right direction, and actually goes a very long way to vindicate the many calls that many Ghanaians have made and also the call by CSOs including GII…” Ofori-Kwafo told Accra-based TV3, describing the president’s decision as a bold one, which deserves commendation.

“But this is quite an interesting development, and for me it’s a welcoming news, that if somebody has been alleged in a video documentary of doing something inappropriate… and then president has stepped in immediately, to ask him to step aside.

“It is good that at least the president has taken a bold step, that is what we have been expecting the president and many other persons with the mandate to hire and fire to have been doing in the past,” Ofori-Kwafo said.
