Metre audit: We’ve discovered over 1, 000 illegal connections in one week, says ECG

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday, the managing director of ECG, Samuel Mahama said customers have taken the company for granted for a long time

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has served notice that it will soon sanction over a thousand customers for engaging in illegal connections after a house-to-house audit.

The illegal connections were discovered within the first week of the ongoing audit of metres by the company.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (12 August), the managing director of ECG, Samuel Mahama said customers have taken the power distributing company for granted for a long time.

“While searching from house to house … my people found more than 1,000 illegalities [in terms of electrical connections] and we have just started. These people will be sanctioned accordingly,” he said.

“The electricity that we enjoy comes at a cost and should that cost not be remedied then quite clearly, there will be repercussions. This is why I always plead with Ghanaians, to be honest with us.”

Mahama added, “Customers of ECG have taken us for a ride for a very long time but no more. ECG is in serious debt because people don’t pay as per the electricity they consume … This helps no one.”

The ECG boss reiterated the assertion that consumers should see electricity as a privilege.

“I have said this and I have continually been misconstrued but the truth is that electricity is a privilege; it is not a right. The moment you want it to be a right then you have to pay for it,” Mahama said.
