PURC Bono office facilitates new transformer installation to end power woes in Prekese
The improvement follows the installation of a new 100kVA transformer, facilitated by the Bono Regional Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and executed by the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo)

After years of struggling with unreliable electricity, residents of Prekese in the Tano North Municipality can now enjoy stable power supply following the installation of a new 100kVA transformer.
The installation was facilitated by the Bono Regional Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and executed by the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
The intervention was a direct response to long-standing complaints from residents about unreliable electricity disrupting daily life and economic activities.
Speaking to Asaase News during a community visit, the Bono Regional Manager of PURC, Patrick Antwi, said the action forms part of the Commission’s mandate to ensure quality utility services for all consumers.
“They’ve had challenges with their transformer for some years now—about five years due to low voltage,” Antwi said. “Our investigations showed the old transformer was overloaded because of population growth. After going through our complaint management procedures, we facilitated the installation of a new transformer, and it’s clearly made a difference.”
According to Antwi, the PURC team returned to Prekese to assess the impact of the intervention and received positive feedback from residents. He also used the occasion to advise community members to practise safe and legal electricity use.
“We’re urging consumers to avoid illegal connections and the use of unqualified electricians, which often leads to equipment damage and worsens existing problems,” he said. “Paying bills and using power responsibly will help utility companies improve their networks.”
With a population of about 2,000, Prekese has experienced steady growth in recent years, placing pressure on outdated infrastructure. The community had struggled with power that was too weak to run basic appliances, a situation that affected students, homes, and small businesses.
The Assembly Member for Yamfo Ndwomase Electoral Area, Haruna Mahama, expressed appreciation to PURC and NEDCo for acting swiftly.
“This has brought great relief to the people of Prekese. We’ve suffered for too long with lights that couldn’t even power a fan or charge a phone,” he said.
A local resident, Appiah Silace Acheampong, also welcomed the development.
“It was a serious problem for us. Business owners couldn’t use their equipment, students couldn’t study at night. Now we are hopeful that life will return to normal,” he said.
The Bono Regional Office of PURC says it will continue to monitor service delivery and collaborate with utility providers to resolve power challenges in underserved communities across the region.
