Prof. Akyeampong meets Education Minister ahead of book launch on Africa’s learning crisis

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu on Tuesday met education expert Prof. Kwame Akyeampong, who presented him with a copy of his new book on Africa’s learning crisis and invited him to its official launch later this month.

The book, “Reconceptualising the Learning Crisis in Africa: Multi-dimensional Pedagogies of Accelerated Learning Programmes,” co-authored with Dr. Sean Higgins and published by Routledge, argues for more inclusive and locally grounded approaches to education across the continent.

During the meeting, Akyeampong invited the minister to deliver the keynote address at the book’s launch on 22 October in Accra. Iddrisu accepted, praising the publication for aligning with Ghana’s current education reform priorities.

“The use of local languages in instruction and teaching that reflects our national values and identity are critical to improving learning outcomes,” Iddrisu said after receiving the book.

Akyeampong, a leading education scholar, said the book challenges global narratives that frame Africa’s education systems as failing, instead highlighting systemic shortcomings that overlook the realities of learners.

Drawing on case studies from Ghana, Liberia, and Ethiopia, the authors examine how community-led and language-sensitive Accelerated Learning Programmes (ALPs) can help children excluded from formal schooling catch up and succeed.

“This is not just an academic work—it’s a call to rethink how we see learning in Africa,” Akyeampong said, adding that the book aims to influence policymakers, educators, and international partners.

The launch is being organised with support from T-TEL Ghana, Luminos Fund, the Jacobs Foundation, the Yidan Prize Foundation, and the mc2h Foundation.
