Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to terminate FGR mining lease if…

The company had earlier been given 120 days to revamp the mines and also pay all outstanding salaries within two weeks

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has warned it will terminate the mining lease of Future Global Resources (FGR) which operates the Bogoso and Prestea Mines.

FGR acquired the mine from Golden Star Resources in October 2020.

The company had earlier been given 120 days to revamp the mines and also pay all outstanding salaries within two weeks.

Operations at the mine came to a halt in December 2023 due to financial challenges leaving workers salaries unpaid.

Some members of the Ghana Mine Workers Union on Thursday picketed at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to demand for the revamp of the mines.

A statement issued by the Lands Ministry after the picketing said “The Ministry has, therefore, scheduled a fortnightly meeting with the leadership of the Company to track progress of work towards revamping the Mine.”

“The Minister’s letter specifically states that “should the [Company] fail to meet any of the above conditions, the Conditional Approval given shall be deemed revoked, and the Mining Leases terminated, without further recourse to the [Company],” the statement said.

“Accordingly, by a letter dated 17th April, 2024 and signed by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, MP, the Company was given one hundred and twenty (120) days to raise the capital, revamp the Mine and ensure that it operates to full capacity,” the statement added.

Meanwhile the sector Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor has said government is committed to revamping the mine and addressing the welfare of the workers.
