President Mahama’s exit strategy: A mixed bag for Ghana’s politics – Dr John Krugu

In a significant move, Ghana’s President John Mahama has announced he won’t seek a third term, resetting the country’s political landscape.

Dr John Kingsley Krugu, 2024 NPP Parliamentary candidate for Bawku West and Former Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency from June 2024 to 31 December and  confirmed as the Agency’s 1st CEO in January 2025 before leaving office in March 2025  shares his insightful analysis on the implications of this decision.

The Good: Clarity and Stability

President Mahama’s decision brings much-needed clarity and stability to Ghana’s politics. By ruling out a third term, he ends speculation about potential constitutional amendments, showcasing restraint in a region where leaders often prioritise personal interests over constitutional limits. This move reminds us that institutions should outlast personalities, promoting a sense of predictability and stability.

The Bad: Accountability Concerns

However, Dr. Krugu highlights the potential downside of this decision. As a lame-duck president, Mahama’s administration may prioritise short-term gains over long-term reforms, weakening accountability and encouraging rent-seeking behavior among appointees. This could lead to a “harvest festival” mentality, where officials focus on personal enrichment rather than serving the national interest.

The Ugly: Power Struggles and Infighting

The real challenge may lie in the power struggles within the NDC. With Mahama stepping aside, the party’s 2028 presidential nomination could become a free-for-all, distracting from governance and reform efforts. Factions may focus more on grooming successors than addressing pressing national issues, potentially destabilising the party and the country.

The Verdict: A Complex Legacy

In conclusion, President Mahama’s decision presents a complex mix of positives and negatives. While it provides clarity and stability, it also raises concerns about accountability and governance. As Ghana navigates this new reality, the strength of its institutions will be crucial in mitigating potential chaos and ensuring a smooth transition .
