President Mahama nominates seven Court of Appeal judges to Supreme Court

President John Dramani Mahama/Supreme Court of Ghana/Prisoner amnesty

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated seven justices of the Court of Appeal for appointment to the Supreme Court of Ghana.

The nominations were made pursuant to Article 144(2) of the 1992 constitution, which empowers the President to appoint Supreme Court justices in consultation with the Council of State and upon the advice of the Judicial Council.

In a letter dated 29 April 2025, and addressed to the acting Chief Justice, the president nominated the following judges to the Supreme Court:

  1. Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei

  2. Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh

  3. Justice Senyo Dzamefe

  4. Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo

  5. Justice Philip Bright Mensah

  6. Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo

  7. Justice Hafisata Amaleboba

The letter, signed by Callistus Mahama, PhD, Secretary to the President, also said that the nominees’ curricula vitae were attached and expressed confidence that the Judicial Council would expedite its considerations.

The correspondence was copied to the Vice-President of the Republic and the Chief of Staff at Jubilee House in Accra. It was addressed to His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the acting Chief Justice.

The development comes amid mounting uncertainty about the Supreme Court following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, a move that has sparked public and institutional interest in the composition and stability of the judiciary.
