President and Judiciary have sinned against constitution, says Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has criticised both President Nana Akufo-Addo and the judiciary for stalling the passage of the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, accusing them of “sinning” against the constitution.

In a passionate press conference on Wednesday (6 November), Bagbin demanded that both the president and the judiciary confess their wrongdoings and seek repentance to be forgiven.

With unwavering conviction, Bagbin stressed his belief in the supremacy of the constitution, declaring: “Both the president and the judiciary have sinned against the constitution and must seek the opportunity to confess and repent to be forgiven.”

“I believe in the supremacy of the constitution; mark my words, the supremacy of the constitution, not the supremacy of the judiciary or Supreme Court.”

The Speaker also addressed the role of Parliament in safeguarding democracy, emphasising the need for a vibrant, independent legislative body.

He added, “I also believe in a vibrant parliament that is respected and accorded its due on political questions as long established by law and decided cases.”

Bagbin described a parliament that reflects the will of the people, upholding its constitutional rights for the benefit of Ghana and its citizens.

In a clear rebuke to the idea of a subordinate parliament, Bagbin stressed that “a rubber stamp parliament subservient to the whims and caprices of the executive and of the judiciary” would not serve the people’s interests.
