We’re set to achieve govt’s plan on renewable energy, says Fred Oware

The CEO of Bui Power Authority says a new bill will empower the Authority to achieve Akufo Addo’s vision of enhancing usage of renewable energy in the country

Fred Oware, the chief executive officer of the Bui Power Authority says the passing of the Bui Power Authority (amendment) bill 2020 into law will empower it to achieve President Akufo-Addo’s vision of enhancing usage of renewable energy in the country.

Speaking on Asaase Radio’s Energy 101 programme, Fred Oware said, “moving forward, once this is approved [Bui Power Authority bill], it gives us the credibility for what we’ve done in the past and also gives us the legal leg, the muscle, strength, the profile for us to do a bit more.”

“We are structured to do the government’s mandate of diversifying the energy mix. It’s the vision of the current president, Nana Akufo-Addo that in 10 years time, solar for example should occupy at least 10% of the energy mix,” he said.

Oware added, “…and it is estimated that at that time consumption should be double what we are using right now…We have made adequate preparations by making sure that every year, we will have the capacity to develop some amount of solar up to 250MW. So that in 10 years time, we will be looking at about 2500MW.”

John Peter Amewu, Energy Minister told Parliament that the Bui Power Authority has demonstrated enough institutional capacity in the area of renewable energy hence the need to give it legal backing to develop clean energy in the country.

Although Ghana abounds in renewable energy resource potential, particularly biomass, solar and wind, the bulk of this potential remains largely untapped.

Earlier, Beatrice Annangfio, a fellow at the Institute of Energy Security (IES) in charge of renewable energy told Asaase Radio that Ghana needs to increase investment in renewable energy to help it achieve universal access to electricity by the new target date of 2025.

“We need such an authority. In fact, we need the authority as early and as urgently as possible,” she said.
