The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), the operator of the national interconnected transmission system (NITS), has attributed the power outages being experienced in some parts of the country to limited gas supply to Tema.
“There will be a supply gap of 550MW at peak time,” a statement from GRIDCo on Thursday said. “This will affect power supply to consumers in some parts of the country.”
“The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted,” the statement added.
Early September, Ghana experienced a major power outage due to “a system disturbance,” according to GRIDCo.
Ghana’s electricity generation had moved from 84% hydro and 14% thermal to 38% for the former and 60% for the latter, causing high tariffs due to gas price volatility and erratic gas supply.
The West African country has no nuclear power plant (NPP) but has chosen a site to build one as part of a drive to become a climate-resilient and zero-carbon energy producer. The NPP project is expected to cost US$581 billion.
