Post-defeat conference should be for reflection, not rallies – Asamoah Boateng to NPP

He warned that the conference, if not properly managed, could descend into chaos and factional campaigning

Veteran New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has called on the party’s leadership to either stamp its authority firmly ahead of the upcoming national delegates conference or consider postponing the event altogether.

Speaking on Atumpan on AsaasePa 107.3 FM on Thursday (3 July) the former Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs expressed deep concern about the current state of the party following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

He warned that the conference, if not properly managed, could descend into chaos and factional campaigning.

“I feel scared. What flag are we going to bear?” he questioned.

“I can foresee people coming there with banners. It will turn into a campaign ground. But for me, we should suspend the event. But if that won’t happen, then we must stamp our authority.”

Mr. Boateng said the party must use the conference as an opportunity for sober reflection, not division.

He urged that the focus shift away from early flagbearer ambitions to rebuilding party unity and strengthening grassroots connections.

“This day must be one of reflection and reconciliation. Let’s concentrate on building the base,” he added.

His comments come in the wake of mounting internal tensions within the NPP, following its loss to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr. Boateng also referenced the findings of the Mike Oquaye Committee, established to investigate the party’s electoral defeat, and called for full implementation of its recommendations.

“We’re currently working on the constitutional reforms, but the political aspects of the report must also be addressed,” he noted.
