Bawumia victory: better to stay in NPP than lose freedoms in NDC – MP warns amid defection talks

Kennedy Osei Nyarko, ranking member, transport committee/MP for Akim Swedru/Kotoka International Airport/Rename

Kennedy Nyarko Osei, Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reconsider switching allegiance to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He emphasizes that the NDC does not offer the same internal freedoms as the NPP.

In a Facebook post published on Sunday, a day after the NPP’s presidential primary that saw former vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerge as flagbearer for the 2028 elections, Nyarko warned that members would lose the ability to openly criticize party leadership and elders if they defect.

“The NPP is a liberal party that allows every member to express their views, irrespective of their position,” Nyarko wrote.

“In the NDC, such behaviors will not be countenanced. Your freedom to take leadership and elders on in the NPP will not be allowed in the NDC for even a day.”

The MP said it is better for members to remain in the NPP and work to influence party decisions than to join the NDC, which he described as more restrictive.

He acknowledged that some members were dissatisfied with aspects of the party but cautioned that they would “never have the freedom” enjoyed under the NPP.

Nyarko’s warning comes amid reports of potential defections following the NPP’s internal elections, signaling possible tensions as the party prepares for the 2028 general election.
