Poor maintenance culture deters sports investment in Ghana – NSA boss
NSA boss Yaw Ampofo Ankrah said the country’s inability to consistently maintain existing sports infrastructure is a growing concern for potential investors

The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has identified Ghana’s poor maintenance culture as a major obstacle to attracting investment into the sports sector.
Speaking on Asaase Radio‘s Team Talk show, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah said the country’s inability to consistently maintain existing sports infrastructure is a growing concern for potential investors, many of whom demand a proven track record of facility upkeep before committing resources.
He further stated that many sporting facilities nationwide are either in disrepair or lack proper management, discouraging private investment and long-term partnerships.
“The plan is to upgrade all our stadia to the standard were we can have sporting activities at the highest level but currently we don’t have that. Our stadia are not up to standard. we need to now close the gap and be consistent with the way we upgrade our edifice.
“Investors are looking for returns, they also look out for track record. The stats unfortunately tell us that every few years we renovate, refurbish and upgrade but then we go back,” he said.
He called for an urgent national conversation around maintenance culture, suggesting that it must be embedded in sports policy, budget allocations, and management training.
“We don’t have a maintenance culture. It is a sad reality. We don’t have a maintenance fund or structure so something has to change. We need to get the right people to manage our stadia and if we don’t have the right people why don’t we train them,” he added.
Ghana has, in recent years, embarked on various initiatives to boost sports infrastructure, including stadium renovations and the construction of multi-purpose youth and sports centres.
However, Ankrah stated that without a deliberate and well-resourced maintenance plan, such efforts risk becoming short-lived achievements.
