Voter registration: EC makes special arrangements for senior citizens

From today, Ghanaians aged 50 and above will be able to register for a voter ID at any EC district office

The Electoral Commission has announced plans for elderly persons in the ongoing voters’ registration exercise.

The EC said special arrangements have been made for persons who are 50 years and above to be able to register.

From today, 25 July 2020, all people in this category can walk into any of the EC’s district offices to register.

In a statement, the EC said the move is to ensure that elderly people do not go through stress in registering for a voter ID.

“Beginning Saturday 25th July 2020, all applicants who are 50 years and above can visit any of the EC’s district offices across the country to register for their voter’s ID card,” the statement said.

Health staff and security officers

The Commission further announced that health workers and security personnel can also register at any district office.

It said all they are required to do is to show proof of identification to registration officials.

The statement urged eligible voters also to endeavour to encourage others to register for the voter ID.

It urged the public to “complement its efforts to raise awareness about this latest arrangement, for the success of the 2020 voter registration exercise”.

Over nine million registered

Meanwhile, the Commission has said that turnout for the voter registration exercise remains very encouraging.

As of Monday, 9,860,164 applicants in total had been registered at various centres across Ghana.

The EC expects to register about 15 million Ghanaians by the end of the voter registration exercise.

The Commission said it has taken steps to ensure that kit is immediately replaced when it develops faults.

“… the deployment of more kits to the registration centres, the increase in the number of mobile teams and back-ups and immediate replacement of faulty kits, have resulted in the relative increase in the number of persons registered in phase three,” the statement said.
