Tamale Mayor calls for decorum in lead-up to NPP primaries

Musah Superior urges candidates to ensure a united front for the New Patriotic Party going in to Election 2020

The Mayor of Tamale, Honourable Iddrisu Musah Superior, has called on candidates in the nationwide parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party to exercise candour and decorum during and after the elections.

This, he argues, will ensure a united front for the party going into the 2020 election, scheduled for December.

Musah Superior, who was speaking in an exclusive interview with Asaase Radio 99.5, said the NPP’s philosophy mirrors decency. Whatever approach any of the candidates adopts during the elections must reflect this reality, he said.

Passionate appeal

“That is how we have become more serious Ghanaians – because we respect every other Ghanaian. So I am just making a passionate appeal, not only to the parliamentary candidates in Northern Region, but across the country, so that we can conduct this election in a decent and decorous manner,” he said.

He continued: “They need to be decorous and decent so that when they are elected, they can get the support of the others. If you say things that are totally false about other people, it is going to be difficult for them to support you.”

The Tamale Mayor, who had hinted at a quest of his own to contest the parliamentary primaries in his native Mion in the Northern Region, said he decided to step down in the greater interest of the NPP after a group of top party elders dissuaded him from contesting.

Besides having a bigger task to administer the Tamale metropolis as mayor, he has decided to focus on his duties in that job, he said.

“I have since been working closely with the energetic young man who has been chosen to contest that seat and I am confident we will win the seat for the NPP,” he said.

Counting on experience

Looking at the candidates who will be contesting the parliamentary primaries in the Northern Region, Mr Superior vouched for their strength and vitality. They have what it takes to deliver victory to the party in December, he said.

He described them as true party people who are very experienced and have what it takes to win.

Even though he has his preferred candidates who he wishes would win the primaries, he is convinced that what ever the results, the NPP will emerge stronger and present a united front going in to the election.

He was particularly excited that the impasse which rocked Gushegu has been resolved with the chief executive officer of the National Petroleum Authority, Hassan Tampuli, emerging as a compromise candidate.

The resolution of the matter puts the NPP in prime position to retain Gushegu for the party in the 2020 elections, he said.

Both the incumbent MP for the constituency, Dr Ziblim Iddi, and his main challenger, Mahama Osman, have decided to step down, making way for Tampuli to emerge as the consensus candidate.
