Reduce size of your ministers, Baako tells Akufo-Addo

Seasoned journalist, Kweku Baako Jnr, argues Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo does not need an "elephant size" government in his second term

Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr, Editor-in-Chief at Large of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, has called for a drastic reduction in the number of ministers in the next administration of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Speaking in an interview with Asaase News, Baako Jnr argued the president must critically look at downsizing the huge figures after serving his first term.

Eighty ministers

“The numbers must change, we have about 120 ministers now, the numbers must change, the foundation has been laid, I agree the vision determines what you want to do, and what you put in,” he said.

Baako added: “But obviously the second term, if I had the chance to advise or make an input relative to the president’s decision, I will tell him he should bring them down below maybe around 80.”

President Akufo-Addo in 2017 came under a heavy public backlash for appointing an “elephant size” government. He later justified the appointment explaining it was necessary to help fast track development in the country.

A necessary evil

“I’m aware that people are concerned about what they see as maybe the cost of this large government,” Akufo-Addo admitted in an interview on national television. “It is a necessary investment to make for the rapid transformation of this country.”

He added that the ministers “are coming to work, it is not going to be a holiday.”

However, on his part, Prof Ransford Gyampo, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, is suggesting to the president to consider appointing 40 ministers in his next administration, which takes off on 7 January 2021.
