IGP promotes police officer who was shot by Caprice armed robbers

The officer together with his team members took part in a special operation to arrest the armed robbers who attacked, shot and robbed a woman

The police officer who was shot during a shootout between the police and the Caprice armed robbers has been promoted from the rank of corporal to sergeant with immediate effect.

The officer together with his team members took part in a special operation to arrest the armed robbers who attacked, shot and robbed a woman at Caprice in Accra.

The injured officer suffered multi-fragmented fractures to the bone of his right thigh due to the gunshot and is billed for a major surgery.

The police administration has, therefore, made the necessary provision under the Police Emergency Medical Intervention Fund (PEMIF), which was launched by President Nana Akufo-Addo in January this year to ensure he receives the best medical care available in Ghana or in other parts of the world as the case may be.

“We wish to once again commend the officer and all the other members of the team for the role they played leading to the arrest of one of the robbers and the death of two others,” the police statement said.

Interior minister’s visit

Meanwhile, the Interior minister Ambrose Dery on Monday (12 December) visited the officer at the hospital to assess his condition and also wish him well, the police statement said.

Dery took the opportunity to thank the police for their invaluable services to the country and “assured them of his ministry’s commitment to support the police in the fight against crime.”

Suspects killed

At least two suspected armed robbers, who attacked and shot a woman at Caprice in Accra on Friday, have been killed following a gun battle with the police, an official statement said.

The police said they have so far arrested one of the armed robbers in connection with the incident following a sustained intelligence.

“Police have shot dead two armed robbers and arrested one in connection with the robbery attack at Caprice in Accra on Friday 9 December 2022 where a female victim was attacked, shot and robbed,” the statement said.

“Sustained police intelligence operations since 9 December 2022, took the fight to the robbery gang at their hideout (name of location withheld for now).

“The robbers engaged the police in a shootout and in the process two were shot dead and one was arrested. One police officer sustained gunshot injury to his thigh and is receiving medical attention,” the statement added.

The police have given assurance that they will go after the fleeing robbers to face justice.

“The police intelligence operations continue to get the rest of the gang members arrested and we wish to assure the public that we will surely get them,” the police said.
