Political parties must invest in technology to advance democracy, says NCA boss

Speaking in an interview on Sunday Night , the NCA boss said NPP's investment in technology paid off in the 2020 elections

Joe Anokye, director general of the National Communication Authority (NCA) is advising political parties in the country to invest heavily in information communication and technology (ICT) to help advance the country’s democracy.

Speaking in interview on Sunday Night with Nana Yaa Mensah, the NCA boss said the New Patriotic Party’s  investment in technology paid off in the 2016 and 2020 elections.

“In every election management you need to have a system that need to address speed and accuracy, and timeliness because people have worked for two, three, four years campaigning, it is a lot of anxiety, you watch CNN and some of these results as soon as polls close, they call it and then it settles,” he said.

Anokye added, “But to have people to wait days upon days and the media have to, it can create problem, but t of course you are doing speed and timely but it has to be accurate, not because you want to call it so you just call it without any scientific driven basis, I think that is not helpful to democracy.”

He said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was able to receive 80% of the pink sheets in the just ended election at midnight on election day.

Winner of Election 2020

On Wednesday 9 December the chair of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, declared President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo the winner of the 2020 presidential election after he defeated the NDC’s Mahama.

Akufo-Addo won 51.59% of the votes cast, against Mahama’s 6,214,889 (a vote share of 47.36%). Akufo-Addo polled 6,730,413 votes out of the total 13,119,460.

However, the NDC has rejected the 2020 results and members describe the election in some parts of the country as riddled with irregularities.

The NDC flagbearer earlier  announced that the party will explore all legal avenues available to overturn what he described as a “flawed elections”.
