No vigilante forces on election day, says John Mahama

The National Democratic Congress flagbearer says he is counting on the alertness of NDC supporters to protect the integrity of the ballot come 7 December

Ghana News Agency (Accra) – John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), says the party is opposed to the formation and deployment of vigilante forces in the 7 December elections.

He said that, as such, the NDC is counting on the vigilance of its members and supporters to protect the integrity of the ballot on election day.

Mr Mahama declared the NDC’s commitment to peaceful elections in an address to the chiefs and people of Kpando in the Volta Region during his campaign tour, said a statement issued by James Agyenim-Boateng, campaign spokesman for the NDC.

Communities should not only ensure that there is no violence on election day, but take steps to prevent violence from people who might want to disrupt the polls, he said.

One million jobs

Mahama said that if elected again as president, he will legalise and regulate the commercial motorcycle business (Okada) to create jobs and grow the local economy. He will also create one million jobs for the youth over four years from 2021 if elected, he pledged.

Mahama said Ghana cannot afford to have young people graduate into a jobless economy, adding that people would have sustainable and decent jobs. He told a gathering of various interest groupings that the most critical thing that people need now are jobs.

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress said a new NDC government would invest in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and make it free. That way, young people would be equipped with employable skills for the job market.

Abandoned projects

Touching on abandoned projects, the NDC presidential candidate promised to complete abandoned hospitals, roads as well as the rest of the 200 community day senior high schools started by the NDC government.

Mr Mahama also re-stated his pledge to pay assembly members to enable them to effectively discharge their duties.
