Asante Akyem North: Residents demand MP’s apology over alleged threats against independent candidate

The demand follows alleged scathing comments and threats made by the MP against Ohene Kwame Frimpong, an independent parliamentary candidate, during a radio interview.

Inhabitants of the Asante Akyem North Constituency in the Ashanti Region are calling for an immediate apology from their Member of Parliament, Andy Appiah Kubi.

The demand follows alleged scathing comments and threats made by the MP against Ohene Kwame Frimpong, an independent parliamentary candidate, during a thanksgiving service over the weekend.

A press conference held by the Concerned Citizens of Asante Akyem North on Wednesday (14 February) deemed the MP’s conduct as unparliamentary and potentially detrimental to the constituency’s political history. The residents urged the lawmaker to focus on development rather than engaging in confrontational rhetoric.

“He used the word “crush” in his statement which is also not clear in the ears of the good people of Asante Akyem North. We, the concerned citizens so far know only one independent candidate in the person of Ohene Kwame Frimpong…Threats and intimidation have no place in our democratic process. We firmly believe in peaceful campaigning, where ideas are debated, and the will of the people is respected. We are not taking those threats lightly, especially when they are coming from Lawyer Appiah Kubi, someone who is supposed to know how the laws of our beloved Ghana work”, the group said.

“We demand that our MP retract this threat immediately. We hope the people of Asante Akyem North deserve a campaign based on ideas, not fears…Our focus should continue to be on the issues that matter most to our communities – health care, education, infrastructure and economic development. These are the challenges that Asante Akyem North is facing now”, they further stated.

The Member of Parliament, Andy Appiah Kubi, is yet to respond to the demands for an apology, raising anticipation for the next steps in resolving this local political dispute.
