Naana Opoku-Agyemang is a non-performer, says NPP campaign team

Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, the NPP’s deputy campaign manager, says the NDC running mate for Election 2020 poses no threat

The deputy campaign manager for the governing New Patriotic Party for the 2020 elections, Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, says the newly confirmed running mate for the opposition National Democratic Congress, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has nothing special to offer.

Dr Abdul-Hamid, who is also the Minister for Zongo and Inner-City Development, said the abysmal performance by the veteran educationist in her time as Minister of Education speaks volumes of her capacity to help Ghana grow.

He was speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday morning.

“She is an accomplished woman … without a doubt. However, she is applying to be the deputy president of the Republic of Ghana.

“She is not applying to be deputy editor of an academic journal. So, she may have all the academic accomplishments and everything else, but the criterion by which she ought to be judged for this job is not a … criterion that [is] applicable to judgements that are made in respect of applying to be an academic for academic journals.

“And therefore her record in public office as Minister of Education is what impinges directly on what she seeks to do as vice-president of the Republic of Ghana.”

Cancelled allowances

Dr Abdul-Hamid described Opoku-Agyemang’s cancellation of allowances for nursing and teacher trainees while she was education minister in John Mahama’s last government as the product of poor judgement.

“For her to have cancelled teacher trainee allowances, I believe, was poor judgement. That’s number one. Two, she cancelled nurses’ trainee allowances. The argument that I made on the question of teacher trainee allowance applies here: she cancelled it.

“She was a lecturer herself, she cancelled our book and research allowance,” Dr Abdul-Hamid argued.

Research allowances

Dr Abdul-Hamid worked as an Islamic scholar at the University of Cape Coast in the period when Professor Opoku-Agyemang was vice-chancellor.

The minister also described Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s cancellation of research and book allowances as the product of a lack of foresight and vision, given how crucial it is for lecturers to have such facilities.

In his estimation, the Mahama-Opoku-Agyemang ticket for Election 2020 poses no threat at all to the ruling New Patriotic Party’s ticket of President Akufo-Addo and Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia.

He added that there is evidence to show that having been in office for a little over three years, the Akufo-Addo-led NPP administration has performed far better in all facets of the Ghanaian economy than the Mahama-led governments during entire eight years of the NDC’s most recent tenure.
