Mahama can’t travel to Europe due to Airbus scandal, says NPP

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) claims former President, John Mahama, is unable to travel to Europe because of the airbus scandal

A deputy Campaign Manager of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mustapha Hamid, has stated that the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has refused to travel to Europe since February this year due to the infamous Airbus corruption scandal.

Speaking at a news conference on Friday (4 December) at the party’s headquarters in Accra, Dr Hamid said Mahama cannot be trusted with the future of the country because he is saddled with one of the biggest corruption scandals ever.

“So bad is this case that candidate John Mahama has not been able to travel to Europe or the United States since the issue broke at the end of February 2020,” Dr Hamid said.

Dr Hamid added: “Indeed, our information is that his own brother Ibrahim Mahama was even made a victim of the Airbus scandal, when he travelled to the United States in January 2019, where he was denied entry and returned to London because of the investigation that was going on involving his two other brothers, John and Samuel.”

He wants Ghanaians to take a keen interest in the scandal to help retrieve monies due the state, which could be channeled into developing the country.

“That is why the Airbus corruption scandal should be of great concern to all Ghanaians. The fact that an international company was able to penetrate to the highest office of the land, and further go on to pay bribes, is an indictment on those who sold their integrity and used their public office for private gain.

“It is a scar on the conscience of those who were entrusted to seek for the common good of all Ghanaians but instead were motivated by their personal pockets”.

Fight against corruption

“We have prosecuted 55 persons, established the office of the special prosecutor, increased the jail term for corruption by amending the criminal offences act to make corruption a felony rather than a demeanour, we have passed the right to Information bill into law,” Dr Hamid mentioned a few of the measures taken by the government to fight corruption.
