The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Mahama, and the leadership of the NDC on Friday (25 September) called on the former president Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings to commiserate with him on the death of his mother, Victoria Agbotui.
In brief remarks, Mahama described the loss of Madam Agbotui as a shared one because she was always willing to offer wise counsel when she interacted with him and other party members.
He consoled the former president and encouraged him to take heart, as “Mama” had lived a full life, he said, and seen it all.

The NDC flagbearer mused: “Mama was the kind of person one would assume would live for ever …”
He also assured the NDC founder that the party will participate fully in funeral activities for the late Madam Agbotui.
Mahama was accompanied by the vice-chairman of the NDC’s Council of Elders, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, the national chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the general secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and other national executives of the NDC.
Madam Agbotui died in the early hours of Thursday 24 September at the age of 101.
About Victoria Agbotui
A native of Dzelukope, near Keta in the Volta Region, she was chief matron at State House from the era of Dr Kwame Nkrumah onwards, catering for all presidents and heads of state up to the 1990s.
She served as head of the catering department in the Office of the President while Jerry Rawlings was in power.
She was married to a Scot, James Ramsey John. It is reported that the former president is her only son.
Victoria Agbotui is survived by her son and four grandchildren: Zenator Agyeman Rawlings, Yaa Asantewaa Rawlings, Kimathi Rawlings and Amina Rawlings.
