The MP for Tema West, Carlos Ahenkorah, has rendered an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for causing a commotion in Parliament yesterday during the counting of ballots for a new Speaker (7 January].
In a statement, Ahenkorah explained that he meant well when he snatched a handful of ballot papers in the Chamber, with the aim of “saving the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) from losing”.
According to Ahenkorah, the NPP could not allow itself to be bullied in Parliament, especially when MPs for the National Democratic Congress, led by Muntaka Mubarak (representing Asawase), kept snatching the ballot box and kicking over the voting booth without any retaliation from the NPP side of the House.
Love for NPP
Ahenkorah said he acted “out of love” for the NPP and that it is just unfortunate that his strategy did not work well.
The Tema West MP apologised for the incident, especially to family and friends “who may be affected” by his actions.
“The NPP in me couldn’t be controlled. I apologise but I tried,” he wrote.
Ahenkorah said he could not sit and watch as NDC executed what he presented as an orchestrated plan towards using NPP members to snatch the Speaker’s position, adding that his apology is genuine.
Ahenkorah was among the 275 MPs sworn in by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on 7 January 2021 to sit in the eighth parliament of the Fourth Republic.
