For the NPP faithful, it’s eyes on the prize

The work of New Patriotic Party stalwarts towards Election 2020 is not all about flashing cameras and fanfare

In the last few weeks to Election 2020, the work of the men and women who keep politics alive for the NPP at the grass roots in Ghana hasn’t really been about loudspeakers and revelry. Of late, it has had still less to do with large public events.

In an effort to help curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, the leadership of the New Patriotic Party issued a directive on 11 November reminding members of the need to limit the size of gatherings. The NPP general secretary, John Boadu, was at pains to remind party workers of the need to enforce the safety protocols.

“We certainly cannot, at this critical moment, throw caution to the wind and destroy all the laudable gains we have made in the fight against COVID-19, which have made Ghana the envy of the world,” he wrote.

Needs and aspirations

In unsung corners, under trees, on hot streets and in quiet corners of all 16 regions of the country, activists have been working away, patiently building towards giving their party a lift over the line and into the 7 December election.

They engage, listen, sympathise, try to understand the needs and hopes of constituents. Then they plan to do what they can to bridge the gap. They train and motivate the core teams that will do the job of monitoring the flow of election day.

Very few of them are famous faces. From Accra to Zanlerigu, they are the lifeblood of Ghana’s governing party.

Do you have a photo or short clip of your local party at work that you would like to share? Email info@asaaseradio.com and we will do our best to publish it. Clips should be no more than 1.5 minutes long. There will be a prize for the best picture taken by 8 December.
