Election 2020: Rawlings was eager to see Mahama lose, says NDP

The National Democratic Party (NDP) says Jerry Rawlings wanted John Mahama to lose because the NDC had departed from the ideals of probity and accountability

Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong, the general secretary of the National Democratic Party (NDP), has claimed that Jerry Rawlings was determined to see the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, lose the 7 December elections.

Speaking at a news conference in Accra on Monday (23 November), Alhaji Frimpong said his claim is supported by a recent confession by the late president that he voted for the NDP in the 2016 presidential election.

Rawlings confessed the point in an interview with Kwaku Sakyi-Addo on Asaase Radio’s Sunday Night show on 12 July 2020.

“When he was alive, he chose not to be part of John Mahama’s 2020 campaign and it will be disingenuous to seek and make him a part of the campaign now that he is gone, much more to link his funeral to the same party’s activities,” Frimpong said.

“The 2020 election is due, but ask yourself as a cadre: will Jerry John Rawlings vote for a candidate that he thought was not fit to lead the party that he founded?

“As a matter of fact, he was eager to see Mahama lose because he believes Mahama and his cohort have departed from the very ideals of probity and accountability upon which the NDC was formed,” the NDP general secretary said.

Hijack the Rawlings funeral

He accused the NDC of hijacking Rawlings’s funeral by engaging in an unnecessary quarrel with the Rawlings family and the state.

“The most unfortunate aspect of this is that the leadership of the NDC is in a desperate battle with the Rawlings family and the state over who has the right to conduct the funeral of the late president who they have maligned,” Frimpong told journalists.

“What they do not know, or perhaps have deliberately overlooked, is the fact that they are robbing the late president of a befitting send-off. They desperately want to reduce his send-off to a party funeral just so they can benefit politically.”

Alhaji Frimpong also debunked reports suggesting the NDP flagbearer, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has withdrawn from the 2020 presidential race.
