Election 2020: One person shot dead for ballot box snatching in Awutu Senya West

The man was shot after he and three others staged a raid on a polling centre after voting had closed

One person has been shot dead after attempting to snatch a ballot box at a polling centre in Awutu Senya West in the Central Region.

The deceased was among four people, believed to be landgaurds, who raided the polling centre on the close of voting. Security has since been beefed up at the polling centre to ensure the peace.

Earlier, two men believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were injured after a shooting incident near the Church of Christ polling station in Kasoa, Awutu Senya East, in the Central Region.

According to our reporter, it is yet to be established whether the incident, which happened 300 metres away from the polling station, is related to the ongoing elections.

Earlier reports suggest the perpetrators of the crime were in a black Toyota Land Cruiser. They opened fire on a Kia saloon car that was driving out of the polling station.

The two injured men have been rushed to a hospital nearby for medical attention. This is not the first time a shooting incident has occurred in the area.

Kasoa shootings

The incumbent MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, confessed to firing shots in July this year at a registration centre in Awutu Senya East.

The action was taken in self-defence during the voter registration exercise, she said.

Despite her efforts to justify the action, it was largely condemned by the public, with many calling for Koomson’s arrest.
