Election 2020: Akufo-Addo in clear lead, says NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it has won six more constituencies in the Greater Accra Region and is poised to win more seats

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it is confident of being retained in power for another four years in the just-ended presidential and parliamentary elections, the party has announced.

John Boadu, general secretary of the NPP  says the party’s projection is based on results of  pink sheets received from over 34,000 polling stations across the country.

Addressing a news conference at the party’s headquarters in Accra,  John Boadu said the NDC has failed to learn from its mistake in 2016 elections after claiming it won the 2016 polls.

“This is characteristic of the NDC which made that infamous claim around this time four years ago that they were in a comfortable lead when their candidate John Mahama had been humbly beaten when we came out in 2016 to show that we were winning, we did so with fact, nothing close to such preparedness was obvious today at the NDC press conference,” he said.

Boadu added, “The NDC has obviously from the Press conference held today ( December 8) have not learned from the 2016 mistake and incompetence, it is obvious that they have no proper system of collation and rely on fake results and hearsay”.

He wants the NDC to desist from creating insinuation in an attempt to put the electoral exercise into disrepute.

Boadu explained that based on the party’s own collation, the NPP will still maintain a majority of the seat in parliament.

Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has told its members to avoid premature celebration, projecting it has captured 36 parliamentary seats from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Addressing a news conference at the party’s headquarters, the Director of Elections of the NDC, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, urged its supporters to maintain their vigilance until the entire process is over.

“We’ve flipped Jomoro, Evalue Gwira in the Western Region and Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North Region. When it comes to Bono East, we’ve flipped Nkoranza North, Nkoranza South, Techiman North and Techiman South. In the Central Region, we’ve flipped Ekumfi, Upper Denkyira West, Awutu Senya West, Cape Coast North, Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese, Twifo-Ati Morkwa, Asikuma Odoben Brakwa and Gomoa West,” Ankrah stated.

According to him, the party has managed to win about six more constituencies in the Greater Accra Region.

“We have won the Krowor, Ledzokuku, Tema East, Adentan, Ablekuma Central, Okaikoi North and Madina parliamentary seats. So far, if you look at the flips, if you put them together, we are looking at about 36 seats that have flipped,” the former Youth and Sports Minister said.

However, John Boadu has described the assertion by the NDC as false and baseless.

“The NDC has lost Damongo, Daboya and Salaga North in the Savanna region, NPP now holds the majority in John Mahama own Region in the Northern region they have flopped, NPP now has a majority in the Northern region. We now control three regions out the five northern regions,” he said.

Boadu added, “NDC has flopped in Upper West Region, the icing on the cake is the historic NDC’s flop in the Volta Region in the Hohoe constituency and as we speak now Peter Amewu is MP-elect for  Hohoe in the Volta Region.”
