E T Mensah: I contested Council of State election to give back to society

The veteran politician E T Mensah says the time has come for him to give back to Ghana by serving under Akufo-Addo on the Council of State

Story Highlights
  • "My motivation to go to the Council of State was to give back to the people of this country what they have invested in me. You will see the number of conferences and study tours I have attended to learn... And so when somebody invests in you, the person expects something back… I must also mount the platform to make sure that I support that idea of the president."

E T Mensah, the former National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Ningo-Prampram, has said that he did not betray Ghana’s main opposition party by running for a membership spot on the Council of State.

In an interview with Kojo Mensah on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (15 February), the veteran politician said his decision to stand in the election was motivated by the need to give back to society.

“My motivation to go to the Council of State was to give back to the people of this country what they have invested in me. You will see the number of conferences and study tours I have attended to learn,” he said.

He added: “When somebody invests in you, the person expects something back … I must also mount the platform to make sure that I support that idea [the decentralisation of local government] of the president.”

Won hands down

The former sports minister was elected to represent Greater Accra Region on the Council of State in a landslide victory last Friday.

He obtained all 58 of the votes in the election to win the slot, defeating his immediate predecessor, Nii Kotei Dzani.

Mensah was declared the winner by the Greater Accra regional director of the Electoral Commission, Kwame Amoah.
