Ashanti regional NDC chairman retained, Ade Coker loses in Accra

In his victory speech, the Ashanti regional chairman Augustus Andrews pledged to unite the party to wrestle power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2024

The Ashanti regional chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Augustus Nana Akwasi Andrews, has retained his position after Sunday’s polls.

The elections which saw 61 aspirants contesting the various positions, gave Andrews 637 beating his main contender lawyer Evans Amankwa, who polled 572.

A former deputy communications officer Alexander Asafo Agyei suffered defeat after contesting his boss, Abass Nurudeen for the communication officer post.

The women organiser slot is still on hold.

In his victory speech, the newly-elected chairman Andrews pledged to unite the party to wrestle power from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2024.

“Let’s move away from creating factions within the party,” he said. “We have to unite towards returning to power in 2024. We are winning the elections and a lot will depend on us here in the Ashanti Region.”

Meanwhile, in Greater Accra, Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore defeated incumbent chairman Joseph Ade Coker to become the new regional chairman of the NDC in the region.

Ashie Moore, a former MP, polled 327 votes to topple Coker who polled 222 votes.

Chaos ahead of results

The police had to fire warning shots in a standoff between unidentified thugs at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, the venue for the elections.

Two civilians who reportedly got wounded have since been treated and discharged.

It is not clear what transpired in the ensuing melee, which occurred at the stadium’s main gate on Sunday.

Top security chiefs quickly moved to the ground to engage the party hierarchy over the incident.

The police had to withdraw their men from the main gate, citing security concerns.

The incident did not affect the voting process.
