Allotey Jacobs to NDC: Akufo-Addo is providing quality leadership, I’ve already sacked myself

The former Central Regional chairman of the NDC argues that President Akufo-Addo is offering mature leadership and must be supported so that he succeeds

Story Highlights
  • "I started changing my mind when I realised that President Nana Akufo-Addo is giving us quality leadership. He is moving this country forward and that every sensible politician, every loving Ghanaian would have to follow and support him."

Allotey Jacobs, a former Central Regional chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has extolled the quality leadership being offered by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

His comments come barely a day after the opposition NDC dismissed him for “indiscipline and anti-party bahaviour”.

Speaking to Wilberforce Asare on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (24 March), Jacobs said Akufo-Addo is offering mature leadership and must be supported to succeed.

“I started changing my mind when I realised that President Nana Akufo-Addo is giving us quality leadership, he is moving this country forward, and that every sensible politician, every loving Ghanaian would have to follow and support him,” he said.

Jacobs added: “So I decided to support his policies, programmes and initiatives and it is going well with Ghana. In spite of the COVID-19 that has brought some difficulties, Ghana is sailing smoothly through to its destination.”

According to him, the NDC is “playing mischief” by issuing a letter expelling him when he had already declared publicly that he is no longer a member of the “Umbrella Family”.

“I don’t know their intention, either to appease their supporters. or maybe they are trying to play mischief. Because I have come out clearly, two weeks ago, [to say] that I no longer belong to the NDC, and I don’t need to write to them that I have left the party,” the social commentator said.

NDC dismissal

The National Democratic Congress on Tuesday expelled Jacobs in a letter, addressed directly to Allotey Jacobs, and written by the NDC general secretary.

“At our meeting on Wednesday 17 March, the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC considered the report and recommendations of the Disciplinary Committee on the case of misconduct and anti-party behaviour brought against you Mr Allotey Jacobs pursuant to article 48(i) (b) and 8 (b) of the NDC Constitution.

“The Committee’s report, which is herein attached for your attention, found you guilty of the said allegations of misconduct, anti-party conduct and recommended among other things your immediate expulsion from the party,” said the letter, dated Tuesday 23 March 2021 and signed by the general secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.

It added: “The Functional Executive Committee … has unanimously adopted the report and accepts fully its recommendation for your expulsion from the party.

“You are therefore by the decision of FEC been [sic] expelled from the National Democratic Congress and for that matter no more recognised as a member of the party and cannot carry yourself as such.”

It will be recalled that last week, Jacobs stated publicly that he is no longer a member of the opposition party.

He has been on suspension from the party since May 2020 for “persistent anti-party conduct”, according to a letter signed by the NDC national chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo.
