I’ll build a 24-hour economy to create more jobs, Mahama tells labour unions

John Mahama believes the 24-hour shift can boost the country’s chances of making Ghana a manufacturing hub in the West African sub-region

Story Highlights
  • “We need to create more employment and so if even we added one more shift of another eight hours, you can imagine the number of people who we can employ. We want to give our industries a tax incentive to do additional shifts and so you can say that with the productivity of the two additional shifts, we will give you a lower income tax rate."

The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, is promising to establish what he describes as a 24-hour economy if elected in the 7 December presidential and parliamentary elections.

Speaking at a meeting with labour unions at the GNAT Hall in Accra on Saturday, Mahama said the policy will be an innovative way of making good use of resources and thereby reducing unemployment.

“We need to create more employment and so if even we added one more shift of another eight hours, you can imagine the number of people who we can employ. We want to give our industries a tax incentive to do additional shifts and so you can say that with the productivity of the two additional shifts, we will give you a lower income tax rate,” he promised.

“Instead of charging you 25 percent for the additional income you make from the two shifts, we will charge you 15%. So, you will be charged 25% from the first shift but on the second and third shifts we will charge you at a rate of 15 and 10 percent income,” he added.

He believes this can boost the country’s chances of making Ghana a manufacturing hub in the West African sub-region.

More more

“You wouldn’t have gotten the income anyway so if they add more shifts and they pay you 10% income tax on productivity of the two additional shifts you are making money,”” Mahama stressed.

“If we are able to do that, all these factories will be able to take in more labour in order that they can increase productivity both for the local market and for export,” the NDC flagbearer told the gathering.

Mahama further called on the labour unions to contribute their part to ensuring a peaceful election after signing a peace pact on Friday with his main opponent, President Akufo-Addo.
