Nana Yaw Siriboe adjudged 2022 National Best Farmer

The 38th edition of National Farmers’ Day was under the theme “Accelerating Agriculture Through Value Addition"

Nana Yaw Sarpong Siriboe, a 43-year-old farmer from Juabeng District in the Ashanti Region, has been adjudged the 2022 National Best Farmer at this year’s Farmers’ Day celebration in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

He took home a cash prize of GHC1 million and two nights’ full board complimentary stay for two at Peduase Valley Resort.

Serebour currently employs 145-plus workers and he has been farming for over 20 years.

He is married with four children and owns a number of farms in the Ashanti Region.

The 38th National Farmers’ Day had the theme: “Accelerating Agriculture Through Value Addition”.

The first runner-up in the National Best Farmer awards went to Adjei Fosu Seth from Kintampo North in the Bono East. He received a tractor, trailer, sprayer and ploughs.

The second runner-up prize went to Professor Akwasi Asabre Ameyaw from Techiman North, also in the Bono East Region. He received a tractor and other agricultural implements.

Tractor plant in the works

The prize for National Best Female Farmer went to Yaa Adjeley from Wassa in the Western Region. She received a cash prize of GHC100,000 and a study tour of Ghana.

Speaking at the event, President Akufo-Addo said plans are far advanced towards establishing a tractor plant in Ghana.

He was optimistic the initiative will help reduce unemployment and the cost of tractors.

“Currently, I am happy to report that processes have been concluded towards the establishment of a tractor assembly plant in Ghana,” the president told guests at the prize-giving ceremony in Koforidua.

“This will go a long way to reduce the cost of tractors and improve access to tractor parts and create jobs,” Akufo-Addo said.

What is Farmers’ Day about?

Ghana celebrates National Farmers’ Day on the first Friday of December each year to recognise the contribution of farmers and fisherfolk to the life of the country.

It is a public holiday, designed to pay respect to the importance of the farming and fishing industries to the country’s socio-economic growth.

It was launched in 1985 by the then government after fishing and farming showed 30% growth in 1984.
