Police warn against live ammunition as drumming ban lifts

In a statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs, the Command highlighted growing safety concerns related to the annual cultural event, which takes place at Gbese Blohum and Abola in Accra

The Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned the public against the use of live ammunition during the official lifting of the ban on drumming and noise-making within the Ga State.

The ban is scheduled to be lifted today, Thursday, 12 June 2025.

In a statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs, the Command highlighted growing safety concerns related to the annual cultural event, which takes place at Gbese Blohum and Abola in Accra.

The lifting of the ban is traditionally marked by the firing of musketry using black powder or blank rounds.

However, the Police noted that in recent years, some celebrants—particularly sections of the youth—had resorted to firing live ammunition, posing serious risks to public safety.

The Command, in collaboration with the Gbese Mantse and other traditional leaders, urged all participants to strictly refrain from using live ammunition during this year’s event.

“Any individual found engaging in such acts will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the statement warned.

The Police assured that they were working closely with traditional leaders and event organisers to ensure a peaceful and incident-free celebration.

The statement urged the public to adhere to all safety directives, cooperate with Police personnel, and report any suspicious or unlawful activities through the Police emergency numbers 18555 or 112.

The Command extended its best wishes to the Ga people as they commemorated the significant cultural milestone.
