Police to rampaging Tamale youth: We’ll deal with you

The irate youth destroyed properties at the Lamashegu police station in Tamale and NEDCO office on Saturday

The police have served notice to a group of irate youth in Tamale, who destroyed the Lamashegu Police Station, located in Tamale in the Northern Region, that they would be dealt with, according to law.

The irate youth also marched to the head office of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) on Saturday and destroyed properties belonging to the state-owned power company in response to a recent assault by four police officers on some residents over power theft.

In a statement on Sunday (26 September), the Ghana Police Service said: “We will make sure that the culprits are arrested and brought to book.”

It added: “Meanwhile, we want to caution the youth to desist from any acts that might disturb the peace of the area because they will be arrested and prosecuted.”

Interdiction

Four police officers in Tamale were last Tuesday interdicted for allegedly assaulting some residents in the Northern Regional metropolis, an official statement said.

The four breached the standard operating procedure of the Service during an operation with NEDCO/VRA officials to arrest persons allegedly involved in illegal power connections.

IGP’s apology

The Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, has spoken personally on phone with the victims to apologise over the incident, promising the rule of law would be followed.

Below is the police statement on the development:
