The Ghana Police Service is preparing to introduce a new technology-driven traffic enforcement system aimed at reducing road traffic violations across the country.
According to Alexander Kweku Obeng of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the system — known as Traffitech-GH— will use cameras and digital platforms to detect offences such as speeding and red-light violations.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (11 March), Obeng said the initiative forms part of a broader effort to modernise traffic enforcement using information and communication technology.
“We have built an ICT hub called Traffitech-GH which has already issued about 120,000 caution notices between 2024 and 2025,” he said.
The system uses cameras mounted on police vehicles and at strategic junctions to capture traffic offences in real time.
Once a violation is recorded, the information is transmitted to a central processing office where officers verify the incident before issuing an electronic notice of violation.
Drivers will then receive the notice through a text message or electronic alert.
“The system will send an electronic notice of violation within 30 to 70 minutes after the offence,” Obeng explained.
Motorists will be required to pay penalties through the government’s Ghana.gov digital payment platform.
The MTTD also plans to introduce a driver penalty point system that increases fines for repeat offenders.
Under the system, repeated violations within a two-year period will attract progressively higher fines, with persistent offenders eventually being referred to court.
Obeng said the digital system is intended to reduce direct interactions between motorists and police officers while improving transparency and compliance with traffic regulations.
