Police in the Western Region have arrested eleven people for engaging in illegal mining along the Bonsa River in the Western Region.
The suspects—seven Ghanaians and four Chinese nationals—were detained on Tuesday (31 March) as part of ongoing intelligence-led operations to curb illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
The Western Central Regional Police Command said five of the suspects—Wei Qinwei, Yao Yongji, Nsoh Oto (also known as Agologo), Kwadwo George (also known as Sergio), and Emmanuel Van (also known as Atta)—were arrested at a mining site in Bonsa.
The other six—Nuang Shichuan, Huang Xinbao, Douglas Ayambilla, Elvis Aborta, Michael Tettey Komlorm, and Ibrahim Dauda—were picked up at Wassa Agona.
All eleven are currently in police custody and are expected to appear in court soon.
In a statement, the Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to tackling illegal mining and maintaining security in affected communities.
“We would like to assure the general public, especially communities within the Western Central Regional Police Command, that the Ghana Police Service remains committed to fighting crime and ensuring security, law, and order in the country,” the statement said.
Illegal mining remains a major challenge in Ghana, with concerns over its environmental impact, particularly on water bodies like the Bonsa River. Authorities have ramped up enforcement efforts in recent years, with multiple arrests and crackdowns on illegal mining operations.
