Police officer shot dead in suspected robbery attack on Zebilla–Widnaba road

A police officer has been shot dead by suspected armed robbers during an attack along the Zebilla–Widnaba road in the Upper East Region, authorities have confirmed.

The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday when two officers travelling from Widnaba towards Zebilla reportedly encountered an ongoing armed robbery operation along the stretch.

According to police, the assailants opened fire upon sighting the officers, fatally wounding one of them.

The injured officer, whose identity has not yet been released, was rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital by a responding police team after a distress call was placed. He was pronounced dead on arrival.

In a statement, the Regional Police Command said it has launched a full-scale investigation into the attack and mounted a special security operation to track down and arrest the perpetrators.

“The Command has commenced a special operation to ensure all persons involved are identified and brought to justice,” the statement said.

Police also reiterated their commitment to protecting residents and travellers within the Bawku Division and surrounding communities, despite growing security concerns along major road networks in the area.

The Zebilla–Widnaba corridor has in recent months recorded sporadic armed robbery incidents, raising calls for increased patrols and enhanced security presence.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and provide information that could aid ongoing investigations.
