Police begin probe into gun attack at Odike’s office

"I have been traumatised but God is with me. I have been vindicated by their actions," Odike told the media after the incident

The founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addai Odike, was attacked on Monday (22 August) at his office at Patase in the Ashanti Region, the police have confirmed.

Odike said he is traumatised after the attack.

“They came back and couldn’t find me again, then they destroyed the vehicles here,” Odike told the media after the incident. “I have been traumatised but God is with me. I have been vindicated by their actions.”

The incident occurred a few days after the politician angered the Manhyia Palace by criticising Asante Kingdom chiefs for their failure to assist in the fight against illegal mining in the Ashanti Region.

He said he will not retract his comment because “the battle line has been drawn.”

“They are after my life, how can I apologise to them? They want to kill me, so why do I go down on my knees to beg them. That portion is past and gone, no reconciliation. The battle line has been drawn, I have to take good care of myself. And see how the police will assist me in terms of security,” he said.

A member of Odike’s team, Francis Addai explained that, “it happened so fast, they asked us to lie on the floor. They gave warning shots, they slapped some of the guys around, they shot into our cars. But I only saw two men, one was wearing a helmet and the other I could not see him clearly.”

“They were asking specifically for him [Odike] meaning he’s the prime target that they were looking for.”

According to reports, some chiefs of the Kumasi Traditional Council on Friday (19 August) performed rituals and slaughtered a ram to ostensibly banish Odike from Manhyia.

The police CID is looking into the alleged attack on the United Progressive Party’s founder and conducting a manhunt for the attackers.
