At least seven persons have been arrested in connection with the violence that erupted in Nima, a suburb of Accra on Tuesday.
Two factions were seen in a viral video wielding machetes attacking each other, with another person engaging in a shoot out in the community.
Speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday (18 January) the director-general in charge of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Kwesi Ofori said the situation has been brought under control.
“Nima, a suburb of Accra witnessed gangsterism and mass violence around 3:30pm and the police quickly and immediately intervened, by disengaging that violence, the violence spread across some sections of Nima and the intervention force had to manage the situation carefully, they managed to stabilise the situation.
Seven arrested
“Seven people have been arrested, five are presently here with us and the other two are on admission under police guard, that suggests they are under arrest.”
He added: “Again we are pursuing the criminals in and around Nima and its environs to make sure that we get them arrested to enable them face justice and the gangsterism that I spoke about is led by one Kumordzi alias Ibrahim Hussein and Bobon alias Ali Awudu, they are rivalry group that never agree on issues and today they went all out on the open street of Nima.”
The police said they have deployed men on the grounds to ensure safety of residents.
“We would like to let the media know that the police have taken charge of the situation and we have nip that violence in the bud, we are in control.”
